Meet Stephen

Stephen is a clinical and counselling Psychologist who lives and works in Muskoka. Stephen grew up in Hamilton, Ontario where his father was one of the first and most prominent personal injury lawyers in that area. He recalls the empathetic and client-centered approach that his father brought to his work. Stephen has been working in the field of psychology since 1986 and as a registered clinical and counselling Psychologist since 1993. Stephen joined Brainworks in 2017 serving the Muskoka, Orillia, Barrie and surrounding areas.

Stephen has worked in variety of settings with diverse clientele. He has worked in a private practice providing individual, couple and family therapy. It was in this setting that he had his first experiences working with individuals who had been involved in motor vehicle accidents and were enduring the emotional, cognitive and physical aftermath. Stephen has worked in hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, and in community-based behavioural and mental health organizations and has considerable expertise working with people who live with anxiety disorders, depression, unstable moods, and/or persistent pain. He uses humor in therapy as a way of balancing the suffering that clients often experience; noting “laughter in the face of fear can be a very therapeutic and motivating experience”.

Stephen’s Practice Areas

All treatment begins with an assessment. Stephen uses a combination of reliable and valid techniques and tools to complete psychological and general rehabilitation assessments. Stephen takes the information gathered from the assessment and weaves it into a comprehensive and complete picture that guides recommendations and treatment.
Stephen provides assessment and treatment for chronic pain. Additionally, Stephen works closely with a team of professionals to offer Contain Your Pain©, Brainworks’ multidisciplinary pain management coaching program, which helps participants gain control of their pain condition through education, motivation and support.
Stephen offers counselling as well as innovative rehabilitation programming to address cognitive, behavioural, emotional, and psychosocial concerns resulting from serious injuries. He has extensive experience working with issues such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, chronic pain, and brain injury.
In all cases, Stephen, a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario, clinically directs treatment programming. However, when required and requested, specially trained rehabilitation therapists are utilized for those clients that would benefit from using psychological strategies, but do not currently demonstrate the ability to apply these types of strategies independently at home and in the community. In this case, the client receives hands-on, direct instruction and support from the rehabilitation therapist in order to functionally integrate the psychological strategies into their day-to-day life. When Stephen uses rehabilitation therapists, they serve as an adjunct, not an alternative to the psychologist.

Stephen’s Bio

Trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, mindfulness based therapies, and other evidence-based therapeutic modalities, Stephen determines which approach best suits his clients’ needs, then works collaboratively with his clients to set and achieve individualized goals.

Stephen tends to work quite actively with clients – helping them to overcome a fear by physically approaching it rather than simply talking about it in the comfort of their home or in an office. He recognizes that people need to be prepared to take their first steps toward overcoming adversity or facing uncomfortable situations when they are ready. Stephen has learned that it is only when someone genuinely accepts whatever difficulty they are experiencing in the moment that they will be prepared to take those first steps. From that point on, Stephen likes to work side by side with his clients, sometimes looking to his clients to lead him in the direction they need to go.
